Midland Park alumna Shortway named NJAC Volleyball
Player of the Week
|
Midland Park's Sara Shortway has been chosen the New Jersey Athletic
Conference Women's Volleyball Player of the Week. A 5-9 senior outside hitter for Richard Stockton College of New
Jersey, Shortway led the Ospreys with 100 kills in the team's first seven matches as they posted a 4-3 record.
A graduate of Midland Park High School, she averaged 3.85 kills per game and led the team in kills in five of
the seven matches. In addition, Shortway also led Stockton with a .280 hitting percentage and 17 service aces and
was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Gettysburg Battlefield Classic over the weekend.
The Stockton volleyball team entered a transition phase in 2002. Whereas the Ospreys featured eight newcomers last
season, they boast eight returning letter winners this year. Still, the roster contains seven sophomores and four
freshman, leaving head coach Eric Illjes with a unit that possesses some degree of experience yet still could be
considered a young team. The building process will continue in 2002 as the Ospreys seek their third NJAC championship
in four years.
Shortway, a 2001 NJAC All Conference First Team honoree, is the team captain and the lone senior on the
squad who is a versatile player who rarely comes out of the lineup. The former Panther led the Ospreys with 1,293
attacks, 460 kills and 71 aces last year while also ranking a close second with 357 digs. |
