Jakobsen, Zocchi ignite Panthers

Christine Jakobsen and Denise Zocchi ignited Midland Park to a 9-3 rout
of Manchester Regional in a B-PSL girls soccer match played in North Haledon on Thursday. The win upped the Panthers
record to 7-3.
Midland Park exploded out to a 5-0 lead by the halftime break and coasted in the second half. Jakobsen and
Zocchi netted two goals apiece with Zocchi also picking up an assist. Katie Gordon, Liza Offreda, Katie Ruitenberg
and Lindsey Salge completed the scoring parade with Shannon Alston, Offreda, Salge and Juliana Sullivan picking
up assists.
Keeper Caitlin Florence came up with three saves.
A day earlier, the Panthers were ousted from the 2002 Bergen County Girls Soccer Tournament when Queen of
Peace posted a 5-3 victory. Salge netted a pair of goals with Jakobsen finding the back of the Golden Griffens
cage on one occasion. Florence had a busy game between the pipes, coming up with18 saves.
New Milford knocked the Panthers out of the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group I girls’ tennis tournament
on Tuesday by a score of 3-2. Stephanie Chapman roared to a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Laura Chomiak in the No. 1
singles slot and Tara Burns coasted to a 6-1, 6-2 victory at second singles against Stephanie Wong but the Panthers
could not salvage the crucial third team point.
Midland Park defeated Park Ridge 3-2 in a non-league boys’ soccer match on Monday. The Panthers opened up
a 2-0 lead by the halftime break on the way to winning their first match of the season following eight straight
losses. Jon Cope and Steve Moraski scored in the opening half with Ian Greid netting the game-winning goal in the
second half. Assists were credited to Chris Nrinkofski, Tim Ferriday and Will Minion while keeper Tim Van Goor
stopped seven shots on goal.. |
