Westwood Cardinals Sports Highlights for Week Ending October 7, 2001

Verobel blanks Bridgemen

Keeper Allison Verobel turned aside both official shots on goal to lead Westwood to a 2-0 victory Fort Lee in a BCSL - Olympic girls soccer match played Tuesday in Fort Lee. The win was the eighth against a solo setback for the Cardinals.
Chrissy Ranadan opened the scoring, netting the game-winning tally while JoJo Laliberte added an insurance tally as the Cardinals opened up a 2-0 advantage by the halftime break.
Mike Cole led the way as Westwood defeated River Dell (22-33) and Queen of Peace (15-50) in BCSL - American boys cross-country competition contested over the 3.1-mile course at Darlington Park. Cole was clocked in 18 minutes, 23 seconds with Trevor Hedges posting a time of 18 minutes, 47 seconds and Bill Flynn finishing in 19 minutes, 3 seconds.
In a non-conference girls tennis match, the Cardinals totally dominated Saddle Brook dropping only three games in upping their record to 3-4 on Tuesday. Lauren Lee posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Karima Bouyahi at first singles and things only got better for Westwood. In the No. 2 singles slot, Hayley Pisaturo cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win against Bridget Heavey while Alexis Resnick was outstanding in shutting out Sabrina Mesloub 6-0, 6-0 in the third singles matchup.
Mariel Ramsperger and Shelley Singh were equally as impressive in blanking Nancy Bialasz and Stacy Florentino 6-0, 6-0 while the second doubles tandem of Jessica Bochner and Ruwani Ganepola won by forfeit.
On Thursday, the Cardinal defeated Englewood 4-1 with Lee leading the way with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Jennifer Ramirez in the No. singles matchup.
Westwood and Northern Valley/Old Tappan battled to a 2-2 standoff in a North East field hockey match played in Old Tappan. Stephanie Roegner and Tess Spagnola scored for the Cardinals with Spagnola and Monica Pradhan picking up assists. Goalie Elana Steinfeld came up with 13 saves.

Pisaturo excels at net

Hayley Pisaturo turned in a dominating performance at second singles to ignite Westwood to a 5-0 victory over Rutherford in a BCSL - American Division girls tennis confrontation contested on Tuesday. The win evened the Cardinals record at 2-2.
Pisaturo totally dominated the competition in the No. 2 singles match as she blankled Rina Shah 6-0, 6-0. The Cardinals top player Lauren Lee posted an easy 6-2, 6-2 victory over Ania Jarosinski in the first singles matchup while Alexis Resnik coasted to a 6-3, 6-2 win against Mancris Margas at third singles.
In the doubles action, the top tandem of Mariel Ramsperger and Shelly Singh came on strong to post a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Jessica Gonska and Melanie Suicaldito in the first doubles slot. Jessica Bochner teamed with Ruwani Ganepola to inflict a 6-3, 6-3 setback on the duo of Ashley Gello and Melissa Monzella.
Westwood's first tennis victory of the 2001 net campaign came on Monday when the Cardinals shut out Queen of Peace 5-0. Lee and Resnick both gave up only one game in posting straight set victories.
Goals by Kristine Deer and Jess Magin led Westwood to a 2-0 shutout over Queen of Peace in a BCSL - American girls soccer match. It was the fifth win against a sole setback for the Cardinals with Deer and Bernadette Bonomo picking up assists. Keeper Allison Verchal came up with six saves between the pipes.
Northern Valley/Demarest defeated Westwood 3-0 in a North East Conference field hockey match contested in Demarest on Monday despite 13 saves by goalie Elena Stanfield.
In girls volleyball, Westwood lost a 2-1 decision to Fort Lee, dropping games of 13-15, 15-12, 16-14 to the Bridgemen.
Katie D'Aca raced to a second place finish in the Girls Group I Division of the Passaic County Coaches Invitational contested at Garret Mountain in West Paterson. D'Aca completed the 3.1-mile course in 21 minutes, 52 seconds. In the boys division, Mike Cole placed 12th with a clocking of 19 minutes, 17 seconds.
