Sweep of doubles spurs Cardinals

Westwood swept the doubles competition to pull out a 3-2 victory over Fort Lee to open the 2002 BCSL - American Division girls' tennis campaign on Wednesday. Hayley Tisaturo supplied the crucial third team point when she cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Kim Brady in the third singles slot.
Mariel Ramsterger and Shelley Singh held on to defeat Jennifer Wnick and Vicky Zeitser by a score of 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) in the matchup at No. 1 doubles. The Cardindals second of Ruwani Ganegola and Bridget McCarthy defeated Paulette Schlein and Malloy Schoenfeld 6-1, 6-4.

Westwood looks to three-peat as the BCSL - American Division champions in girls' soccer as Bill Morrow begins his third season with a career mark of 32-6-1 following last year's 19-3-1 record. Allison Verobel returns as a third-year starter between the pipes while senior Christina Fischetti, a second-team All-Bergen County honoree, provides protection from her sweeper slot. A big plus for the Cardinals is the return ofr senior midfielder Kristine Deer who tallied 11 goals in the first 10 games before going to the sidelines with a torn ACL.
Eric Bethell takes over the Cardinals' boys soccer program than produced a 10-10 mark last year but has not qualified for the NJSIAA playoffs since 1987. The Cardinals return seven starters from the 2001 team that won nine of its last 12 games, five of whom are key seniors. Striker Joe Mamora starts for a third season and midfielder Fadi Sarkis is a potent tool on the attack while another midfielder Tom Verricho makes the transition game work. Brothers Caesar and John Fallas transferred from Emerson last year and after sitting out the 30-day waiting period, were instrumental in the Cardinals success down the stretch
