HAMDEN, CONN. - The 14th-ranked Fairleigh Dickinson University men's soccer team, captured its first win of the 2002 season with a 3-0 shutout of the University of Maine (0-1-1) at the Quinnipiac Classic. Three different Knights scored goals as they improved to 1-0-1 on the year.
Freshman Carlos Alarcon (Clifton, NJ) got the Knights on the scoreboard with his first collegiate goal in the 29th minute on a long ball from senior Tony Nylander (Teaneck, NJ) With just 4:15 remaining before the half, senior Aaron Paye (Brooklyn Park, MN) notched his first goal of the year as he tapped in a pass from sophomore Mathieu Savaria (Montreal, Quebec). The Knights added one for insurance in the second frame as senior Dirceu Hurtado (Totowa, NJ) tallied his first of the season on a ball from freshman Nadav Gottesman (Haifa, Israel) with just under 33 minutes to play.
Fairleigh Dickinson out-shot the Black Bears 18-11. Junior goalkeeper Andrew Nucifora (Monroe, Conn.) made seven saves to notch his first collegiate shutout for the Knights. Josh Sjostrom stopped six shots for Maine.
"We played very solid defensively today," said Knights' head coach Seth Roland. "We didn't necessarily have more scoring chances than we did on Friday, but today we finished those chances in a much sharper manner."
The Knights are off until September 7, when they travel to take on Drexel at 1:00 PM. They will then open up their home and NEC schedule on September 10, against Sacred Heart at 4:00 PM.
