Basssett named Atlantic 10 Baseball Player of the Week

Paramus' Mike Bassett has been selected the Atlantic 10 Conference Baseball Player of the Week for the third time this season. A graduate of Paramus High School, he is a 6-2, 205-pound senior outfielder for George Washington University that currently sports a 30-14 overall record and stands second in the West Division with a 14-2 record, one game behind first place Richmond.

Bassett blasted three home runs for the week but none was more important than his two-run shot with two outs in the 10th inning to lift George Washington past Richmond by a score of 4-2 on Saturday. He knocked in three runs in the double-header against the Spiders.
Last Wednesday, he went 6 for 6, blasting two homers and plating four runs to propel the Colonials to a 14-8 victory over Towson. For the week, he batted .611 going 11 for 18 while driving in seven runs and scoring six times. He tops the Colonials in hits with 60, RBIs with 58 and homers with 14.
A First team All-Atlantic 10 selection as a junior, Bassett is the Colonials' career leader in home runs with 57. Last season, he led the team with 14 home runs, 15 doubles and 230 at bats and was runnerup with 59 RBIs. He topped the Colonials with 15 home runs in 2000 when he tied for the team lead with 72 RBIs and was third on the team in hits with 72.
He burst on the Washington, D.C. campus with a tremendous freshman campaign, batting .313 with 14 homers and 46 RBIs as he finished third in the conference in home runs. The former Spartan recorded 12 multiple RBI games as a freshman, driving in a season high six runs versus Xavier while hitting .545 with the bases loaded in 11 chances.
At Paramus High School, he accumulated 34 career home runs and 128 RBIs, quarterbacked the football team, passing for 1,350 yards and wrestled in the 171 pound weight class where he placed third in the state tournament.
