Wayne grapplers excel in North Jersey Novice Tournament

Wayne's youth wrestling squad turned in an exceptional effort at the North Jersey Novice Tournament contested Sunday at West Essex Regional High School in North Caldwell. Brian Firerson, Scott Jaffa, Jeffrey Nichols, Matt Poole and Alex Rosen wrestled to gold medals.
Picking up silver medals were Greg Buonpasore, Michael Doster, James Finnegan, Chris Kendall, Casey Pickler, Ergan Sarayli and John Swierkocki while Joe Andelora and Matthew Davis claimed bronze medals with third place efforts. Finishing in fourth place were Mike Bullman, the Heffern brothers Brian and Don, along with Mark Salerno.
Wayne completed its regular-season campaign in the Tri-County Youth Wrestling League with a 6-6 record, dropping its final matches to Hopatcong (72-41), Roxbury (75-40) and Mount Olive (63-45). Anthony Garnto, competing at 90-pounds against Hopatcong, seta new record for the fastest pin in the TCYWLTri-County when he wrapped up and planted Anthony Mazzelle 13 seconds into the first period. His quick fall topped his year's record of 23 seconds established by Sean Miller in the 82-pound bracket and betters last year's record of 21 seconds set by Dave LoFrisco.
In the TCYWL season finale against Mount Olive on Friday, Wayne trailed 24-0 before Dan Schneider decked Stephen LaBlanc in the 70-pound bout. Sean Miller won a decision over Eric Dicolo at 82 pounds and Keith Macellaro pinned Alan Niederlander in the meeting of 94-pounders. Zach Barbieri wrapped up Shatner Franchi in the 102-pound bracket and Matt Rigoglioso packed away Peter Petrosino at 123 pounds. Dane DeMeo (130) and Don Hefferon (147) picked up forfeits and Joe Gazzillo completed the competition by pinning John Martin in the conlcuding 174-pound bout.
A day earlier, Wayne entertained Roxbury and suffered a 75-40 setback. Jacob Rigoglioso gave Wayne the earlier lead at 3-0 when he posted a decision over Tim Garripoli in the opening 50-pound bracket. His brother Luke showed David Restivo the gum lights at 58-pound and Jeff Wichot registered a major decision over Bryan Palanchi as Wayne moved in front 13-3.
Roxbury retaliated, winning the next six weight classes to surge into a 39-13 lead before Garnto packed up David Bennett at 90-pounds. Macellaro made it back-to-back falls when he deckled Richie Kunz at 94-pounds and Bob Bishop won by a decision over Tim Sisto at 98-pounds to narrow the deficit to 39-28.
DeMeo pinned Santino Mangiro at 130-pounds and Joe Gazzillo packed away Sean Dawiskiba in the concluding 174 pound match.
