| Originally settled in 1695, the Township of Pequannock was incorporated in
1740. It is located in Eastern Morris County, along State Highway 23, approximately 5 miles north of the interchange
of Route 23 with Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 46. Interstate 287 crosses the northwest corner of the Township,
with a full interchange just north of Pequannock in the Borough of Riverdale. The Township encompasses two communities
- Pequannock and Pompton Plains - each served by its own post office and is primarily residential with a population
of 14,604 residents (latest available [1998] U.S. Bureau of the Census estimate). It covers a land area of just
under 7 square miles. Pequannock High School is located at 85 Sunset Road, Pompton Plains, NJ 07444. Known as
the Golden Panthers, the scholastic teams compete in the Northern Hills Conference and North Jersey, Section 2,
Group II of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association. The Township operates under a Council-Manager
form of government which was instituted in 1957. The voters elect five councilpersons who in turn elect one of
their members to serve as Mayor. A Township Manager is the Chief Executive and Administrative Officer of the Township. |
