Should checking be banned in youth ice
hockey?

The American Academy of Pediatrics has called for a ban on
checking in youth ice hockey to reduce injuries. A study conducted by the nation's largest organization of pediatricians
cited checking for as much as 86 percent of injuries in the sport at the youth level and recommended that checking
be prohibited in all games with players under 15 years of age.
The AAP suggested the 15 year old plateau because competition in youth sports begins to drop at that age and the
biggest discrepancy in physical size occurs in the 13 to 15 year old range.
USA Hockey, which sets the checking guidelines for most youth ice hockey organizations, prohibits checking under
the age of 12. Some coaches and officials reject the idea of a ban on blocking, bumping or ramming opponents. There
reasoning is that checking is an integral part of the game and that players need to develop safe techniques at
an early age when they weigh less. |
