Anzelone, Myhren headed to Mississippi

Compliments of Advertiser North

Vernon's P.J. Anzelone and Tim Myhren are members of the Iron Area 16-year old All Star Team that will travel to Gulfport, Mississippi to compete in the 16-year old Babe Ruth World Series. The Iron Area squad qualified as one of 10 teams for the national tournament by capturing the Mid-Atlantic Region title against nine other teams in Newark, Delaware.
The World Series begins on August 10th with the 10 regional qualifiers divided into the American and National Divisions. Following head-to-head play, the top three teams in each division will begin play for the national title in a single elimination format that runs from August 16 through 18.
The Road to Gulfport began for the Iron Area Stars when they won the state sectional title in a game against the Monmouth All Stars. The next stop was Delaware where teams from Delaware, Maryland, New York and Pennsylvania plus New Jersey competed in a double elimination tournament. The Iron Area Stars rallied to defeat Syracuse 6-4 in the championship game.
Anzelone and Myhren are both members of the Vernon High School diamond squad and have been impact members of the All Star team that includes players from Morris and Sussex Counties. Anzelone anchors the outer pastures as the starting center fielder and has been dangerous at the plate, launching a shot over the center field fence against Syracuse. Myhren has been a versatile asset, playing both second and third while hurling a shutout against Syracuse in an early round game.

Vernon - Sussex County's largest school system

Vernon was established on November 19, 1792 when it was set off from Hardyston Township. The 68 square miles which marked the town's borders over 200 years ago have not changed since. However, the population of Vernon that was a mere 1548 people as recently as 1950, has steadily grown since the 1960's, when the ski industry was introduced to the area. Today, the town's growth is best reflected by its school system - its 4800 students make it the largest school system in Sussex County. It is bordered on the north by Orange County (NY), on the east by Passaic County (NJ), on the south by Hardyston Townbship and on the west by Wantage Township with the western border is formed by the Wallkill River. Other physical features include the Wawayanda Mountains, Lake Wawayanda and the "drowned lands of the Wallkill", a marshy tract of land at the southwestern part of the township. The principal villages in Vernon Twp. are Vernon, McAffee (West Vernon), Canisteer and Glenwood (once called North Vernon).
