Sparta's Curcio competes in 2001 World Scholar-Athlete Games

Sparta's Chris Curcio

Sparta's Christopher Curcio has been a two-year starter on the Blair Academy varsity soccer team and will commence his senior campaign in September with the Bucs. From June 22 until July 1, he displayed his skills on a global stage in Kingston, Rhode Island as a scholar-athlete at the 2001 World Scholar-Athlete Games.
Curcio, who will serve as Bucs tri-captain this season, maintains an honor roll standing in the academic segment of his secondary education and is a volunteer in a church senior citizen assistance program, factors that contributed to his selection fo the WSAG which is the second-largest international gathering behind only the Summer Olympics.
The Sparta resident was one of more than 2,000 of the world's finest young scholar/athletes ranging in age from 15 to 19 who met in the Ocean State for the celebration ot education, diversity, athletics and cultural arts. This was the third quadennial event with the two previous WSAG gatherings held in 1993 and 1997.
Competitions were held in baseball, basketball, chess, field hockey (girl's), golf, lacrosse, rugby, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis (doubles), track & field and volleyball. There were no national teams as participants were placed on teams and in groups with students from other countries, providing a unique educational, cultural and athletic experience.
The Third World Scholar-Athlete Games is derived from a concept that is unique, yet dates back to the first modern Olympic Games of 1896, but it seeks to add a new dimension. Those Games grew out of the belief that international sport could be a force for understanding and friendship among world athletes and, indirectly, among nations. The World Scholar-Athlete Games upholds that tradition while enhancing it in its simultaneous celebration of scholarship, athletics and cultural growth.
One of the objectives of the event is to promote understanding, acceptance and friendship among the youth of the world while another is to establish open, non-political, long-standing relationships among tomorrow's world leaders. The WSAG utilizes sport and the cultural arts as a means of communication and learning rather than competition among nations; and attempts to identify and train young people to develop leadership skills and networking strategies as they pursue positions of leadership in business, government, education and other professional fields.
