While Kenyan Nelson Ndereva was fastest to the finish line among the 299 participants who completed the 5th Annual Sparta Main Street 5K in front of the Sparta Athletic Club on Saturday morning, a dozen Sussex County residents turned in gold medal performances in their respective age divisions.
Newton's 13-year old Sam McMullen was the youngest local champion, racing to victory among the 14 and under boys with a clocking of 18 minutes, 14 seconds. Race Director Andy Ball of the Sparta Athletic Club designated The Center for Prevention and Counseling as the recipient of the financial proceeds of this year's competition. Located in Newton, the organization provided alcohol and drug counseling for teens and adults who reside in Sussex County.
Once again, Ball developed a festive atmosphere with a live band along with kids' activities such as face painting, loonie balloonies, duck games, Space Farms animals, itty-bitty fire company, merry-go-round, contests and roller blading with DJ. There were several visiting mascots such as Claudia Cardinal, Mr. Bean from Dunkin' Donuts, Mr. Pee Wee Tennis and Officer McGruff the Safety Dog.
