Newton - the Sussex County Seat
|
| Newton's population of 7,521 in 3.3 square miles makes it the second most densely
populated municipality in the county. It is one of the county's more clearly defined municipalities. Standing as
it does amid the largely rural farm townships, it has traditionally served as a marketplace. |
| The historic county seat that was a center of commerce before the Civil War remains
so today. County administration and court buildings, including the historic main courthouse, dominate much of the
downtown area, with some offices occupying the Victorian and turn-of-the-century homes throughout the district. |
| Centered on a park and downtown square at the intersection of routes 206 and 94,
the town's primary business area is along Spring Street, where a $1 million revitalization project was completed
recently. Renovations were also recently completed at the Park building in the Newton Green. |
| The town offers residents athletic fields, a roller skating area and a swimming
pool at Memory Park. Ice skating is also available at the Summit Avenue Park. Also within the town's boundaries
are Sussex County Community College and Newton Memorial Hospital. |
| Students attend Newton
High School where the team's are known as the Braves and compete
in the Sussex County Interscholastic League as well as the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association. |
