Mount St. Mary Mount Lions' Sports Highlights for week ending September 15, 2002

Mount Lions net back-to-back wins

Mount St. Mary opened the 2002 girls’ tennis campaign on Tuesday with a 3-2 victory over Union Catholic. The Mount Lions swept the doubles action as the top tandem of Marian Caram and Allyson Goetschius routed Melissa Malapit and Kristy Ries by scores of 6-1, 6-0 and the second duo of Courtney Lynch and Jessica O’Hara won by a forfeit. The crucial third point came out of the third singles competition when Justine McGowan crsuied to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Sheri Jones.

On Thursday, the Mount Lions upped their record to 2-0 by defeating Jonathon Dayton 4-1. Mount St. Mary swept the singles competition with Christine Cholankeril defeating Val Zlotsky 6-3, 6-4 in the meeting of No. 1 singles players. Maria Perez dominated the action at second singles, crushing Jamie Neville 6-0, 6-1 while McGowan rallied to defeat Abby Wilkenseld 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. The duo of Caram and Goetschis outlasted Rachel Duskin and Amanda Garlen 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

On Thursday afternoon in Watchung, Mount St. Mary defeated Governor Livingston 2-1 to open the field hockey season. Junior forward Julie Harris netted both goals and senior right wing Cassie Dewey assisted on both scores.
