Fairleigh Dickinson University's Anthony J. Petrocelli College of Continuing Studies is offering a new Master of Sports Administration (MSA) degree that is the only such degree program in New Jersey.
"The master of sports administration will fill a very important regional and national need," said Kenneth Vehrkens, the dean of the Petrocelli College.
Vehrkens continued, "The sports industry is expanding in many directions, and there is a shortage of qualified administrators. Fairleigh Dickinson University is surrounded by professional teams, NCAA Division I and Division III intercollegiate programs along with high school and community recreation events that will provide internship opportunities for students enrolled in our program. The Master of SportsAdministration program will serve a very important role in New Jersey - a state with a huge interest in sports - and also on a national level."
Sports In The Garden State, Inc., the sports wire service of NJ Sports, will be offering a diversified range of internships for the Master's candidates. The firm, a primary course for internships at the CSB School of Broadcasting, will provide sessions in professional sports management to sports event planning and implementation at venues such as the Prudential Center in Newark. In addition to offering sports marketing and media relations services at professional, college and high school venues, staff members will serve as guest lecturers.
Classes began in January, 2009 at convenient off-campus locations and are offered in a blended model, combining the traditional classroom setting with online work, and through completely online delivery. The program is under the auspices of the School of Administrative Science.
The 36-credit FDU program includes 15 credits of required courses, 15 credits in a specialization and six credits of electives. The three areas of specialization are sports administration, coaching theory and strategies and recreation administration.
